3 Small Things We Can Do To Use Less Plastic:
I really wish I had put more emphasis on the effects of Plastic when we were starting our business. It’s so important and as I look online, I realize it’s worse than I thought. There are so many ways we can all do a little to help. I recently saw a poster just hanging on a pole and I saved it on my phone. A few days later, I decided to post it on my Instagram page. Selfishly, I thought I could stop thinking about it if I had shared it like that was going to be enough. It’s not enough. It’s a start, right? Spreading information will help but it’s not enough.
The reason we started making our Matching Serving Sets was to have something reusable for our dinners, brunches, barbecues, birthday parties, and holiday dinners. It’s part of my table decoration so I no longer have to buy reusable plastic party packs.
We used to live in South Bend, Indiana and our city had a recycling program. When we moved to a small town in Kentucky, there was no recycling program. It was a habit we could not break. We kept a plastic tub (yes, plastic) by our back door and this is where our recycling would go. Then, once a week we would drop it off at the local recycling bin downtown. Recently, we started seeing red trash bins next to people’s regular trash bins. Could it be? Did our town finally catch up? Are we recycling? Yes, for a fee…
So, we called our water company, because our water company controls the trash… If we pay $5 additional per month, we can recycle. Well, guess what? I did it! I did have an ulterior motive, though. I wouldn’t have to drive to the local recycling bin downtown anymore. I’m sure I used more than $5 in gas each month to drop off my recycling. But, the point of this is, we are still recycling and we’re not putting extra gas fumes into the air. It’s something small that we are doing, but it’s something.
Here are 3 Small Things You Can Start Doing Today To Help Protect The Earth From Plastic:
1.) Keep reusable bags in your car. Once you get used to using them, it will become a habit to carry them into the store with you. After you unload your groceries, put the bags back in the car. Easy.
2.) Use reusable water bottles. This is the hardest one for me. I have always drunk my water and then poured tea into the empty bottle to take to work. Since the bottle has a lid, I won’t spill the tea on my work computer. In my mind, I was using the bottle twice, so it’s still being recycled. Then, the bottle goes to the recycling bin. This is better than nothing, but I am trying to use fewer water bottles and I am trying to use reusable bottles. It’s a work in progress, as they say. (Whoever they are) -Update: Since this post, I have purchased a water purification filter for my kitchen sink. No more water bottles for us!
3.) Assuming that you have made it this far, the following suggestion might come as no surprise: Recycle. I often find my recycling bin to be much fuller than my trash bin, and that did surprise me. Numerous items can be recycled, so it’s always worth taking the extra step to dispose of them in the appropriate bin. Help us spread our message to replace one plastic item with wood.
